5th Grade STEM Science Syllabus
Your child will be expected to have:
Composition book (to be kept in the classroom)
Pencils
Colored Pencils
Scissors
Glue Sticks
All students will be required to sign the science safety contract which outlines the class expectations. Students are expected to actively participate in all class assignments.
What to do if you are absent: Check the designated area for any missed work. Please check the Google Classroom for any posted work for the day. It needs to be completed in a timely manner (no longer than 3 days). Students will receive a points deduction per district policy for late assignments. If a student does not return the assignment, then he/she will receive a zero. A student will be able to make up tests/quizzes if he/she is absent. Due to the nature of hands-on learning, technology lessons, labs/experiments and videos are unable to be made up.
What to do if you fail an assignment: If a student fails an assignment, it is the student’s responsibility to attend tutorials for additional help with the curriculum. Once the student has proven mastery over the failed material, the teacher will adjust the failing grade accordingly.
Homework: Students will have various projects and homework assignments throughout the year. Assignment due dates will vary. It will be the student’s responsibility to keep up with their homework and turn it in on time. A reading log will be sent home weekly through Avid. This homework will count as a completion grade for Avid Homeroom. This is an assignment all Barber Middle School students will be completing. This reading log counts towards academic honor rolls.
Grading:
Formative: Daily Work, Warm-ups, and Homework 55%
Summative: Labs, Journal, Quizzes and Unit Tests NO Redos 45%
Academic Dishonesty: A student found cheating, or aiding in cheating, will receive a grade of zero on the assignment and the teacher will contact the parent. Cheating will include being in possession of another student’s assignment, with or without that student’s knowledge, copying work from another student, or plagiarism from a book or internet.
Additional supplies throughout the school year will be needed for the numerous hands-on projects. An example of these supplies will be: craft sticks, pipe cleaners, tri-fold boards, tissue paper, shoe boxes, empty water bottles, toilet paper tubes, etc. Thank you in advance for supplying these items when asked.
