Mr. Hulse-Welcome to Reading!

I plan to provide all of your child's accommodations and modifications during this time of distance  learning. At this time no formal tests will be administered and we will be working on material that we have previously learned. I have set up office hours from 10-12 to be reached quickly but can help any time of the day. I can provide one on one support as your child needs it over the phone, chat or video over google hangouts which all Dickinson ISD students have access too.

This week just choose one off of the choice board to complete. Please continue to read for 30 minutes. I have attached some read alouds and if you click on the cc button you can follow along.

Read alongs

"Dr. Brad Has Gone Mad! "By Dan Gutman. It is 52:33 minutes and would count for 2 days of reading.

Initial log in with chromebook not used before:

  1. have student log in with their school id and password

  2. go to chrome store and type in cowriter extension  https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/extension

  3.  "add to chrome" the extension-you will see it downloading on the bottom right corner

  4. once it is added you will see a grey/black cloud symbol in the top right task bar with a small red dot

  5. click on the cloud and click sign in

  6. click sign in with their google account

  7. click their name

  8. wait......cloud will turn to blue when it is fully functioning

  9. anything they can type into will provide a box of words to choose from

  10. Open a google doc and the Cowriter word prediction will open.

**tip: refresh page if the word prediction box does not show up in your google doc

log in from a chromebook they have used before

  1. have student log in with their school id and password

  2. once logged in their "cloud" symbol should be on the top right task bar already

  3. click on the cloud and click "cowriter" it should automatically turn on

  4. if you do not see the cloud after they log in and you know they have been on cowriter before with this chromebook you can click on the the 3 dots to the far right of the task bar and go to settings and then extensions and then should see cowriter; if cowriter is not there then start back over with directions for initial log in

Cowriter can be an amazing tool....it will begin to learn its user and predict what they are writing about over time such as if you write "beach" multiple times the next time you start with a "b" it will give you beach as a first choice; you can also customize it to give you a certain "dictionary" such as if you are writing about George Washington. This type of customizations can be found by clicking on the cloud and going to options:

Other features:  they also have access to the microphone that is a symbol at the bottom of their word box; if they click on it they can speak their sentence or word; they can click on the number 123 and it will type numbers ; the book symbol is a quick link to topics

Fifth Grade ELAR Syllabus

Welcome! The Fifth grade ELAR teachers are looking forward to working closely with you this year to ensure your child is successful in the fifth grade and beyond.  Please read this syllabus closely with your student.

Philosophy: Your student’s teachers strive to provide the tools to foster critical thinkers who are owners of their own education through an internal desire to learn. Our goal is to grow our students into effective problem solvers and communicators through reading and writing.

Overview: During this year in English Language Arts and Reading (ELAR), we will be covering the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for the fifth grade which can be found online at www.tea.state.tx.us. DISD 5th grade will have 9 essential TEKS to focus on this year.

  1.  5.6(C): use text evidence to support an approopotte response.

  2. 5.6(D): paraphrase and summarize texts in ways that maintain meaning and logical order.

  3. 5.8(D): analyze the relationship of and conflicts among the characters.

  4. 5.8 (C): analyze plot elements, including rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.

  5. 5.9(Di): recognize characteristics and structures of informational text, including: the central idea with supporting evidence.

  6. 5.9(Dii): recognize characteristics and structures of informational text, including: organizational patterns such as logical order or importance.

  7. 5.10(B): analyze how the use of text structure contributes to the author’s purpose.

  8. 10(C): analyze the importance of print and graphic features to achieve specific purposes.

  9. 5.10(D): describe how the author’s use of imagery, literal and figurative language such as a simile and metaphor, and sound devices achieves specific purposes.

Curriculum:  The Reading Workshop is a powerful, research based teaching framework developed at the Teacher’s College at Columbia University. It is a part of a balanced literacy program. The basic format of a reading workshop class looks like this:

Independent Reading: It is imperative to your students success in reading that they are consistently reading for at least 30 minutes a day. This can be in the form of physical books of any genre, ebooks, online read alouds, online articles, etc.

Grading:  55% Formative Assignments/Assessments (i.e. classwork/homework/quizzes)

               45% Summative Assessments (common assessments/CBA’s/projects)

Students will receive a minimum of 12 number grades every 9 weeks.  At least 3 of the grades will be major grades such as assessments, projects, or writing assignments.

Tutoring: When in-person school resumes, tutorials will always be available before school from 7:30-7:45. Additionally, after school tutoring will be encouraged as needed.  One morning tutorial is recommended after an absence.

STAAR: Students will be taking the STAAR test this year. STAAR stands for “The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness.” Success on the STAAR test is important because satisfactory performance shows us that your child is on track for college. Please visit http://tea.texas.gov/student.assessment/parents/

Interactive Notebook:  A virtual interactive notebook will be used during remote learning. This is a place where students can keep notes on their learning as we go. This is a changing document and is to be personal to the students. We will use 2 composition notebooks for in-person learning for students who chose this option.

Please do not hesitate to contact me at any time with questions or concerns.  I can be reached after school or during my conference/ office hours .  Additionally, email is a great resource for communication if you have access to it.

Together we will ensure your child climbs the mountain to college. Every decision I make will be with the best interests of your child in mind. When your child walks through my door they become my family, too, and I will treat them with the respect and love they deserve.

Sincerely,

Chad Hulse
