Hello, parents and students!

As you are aware, COVID-19 has placed us in limbo as a district and a community on what to do next. As of right now, Dickinson ISD will be closed through April 10th, 2020. The next several weeks are going to be rough and will test us as people, but I pray for strength and health for you all and we WILL get through this together.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As you know, plans are changing with each press release and with action taken by local, state, and national authorities. Please bear with us as we do our best to adjust accordingly. Here is some information that was given to us teachers that I am sharing with you:

STAAR/EOC. The state has waived the STAAR for this year. How the students will make that up, if needed, is unknown at the moment.

HOPE Clinic.  The HOPE Clinic at DHS is open Monday – Friday from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM for students and for staff.  If you need to see Ms. Lounds at the clinic, enter through the side doors near the tennis courts/softball fields.  Do not hesitate to come see her if you or one of your children become ill and you cannot get in to see your doctor or pediatrician.

SENIOR STUDENTS.  If you have a senior at home or you know one who is distraught over prom and/or graduation, please encourage them to stay calm and not panic.  DHS will host graduation, and at this time, it is still planned for May 21.  Prom is up in the air right now due to the City of Galveston order for all large-gathering events scheduled through May to be cancelled.  Once we return to school, we will find an alternate venue, and we will make sure that our students experience the time-honored tradition and the right of passage of the senior prom.

Here is the plan for delivering instruction to our students over the next four weeks—March 17 – April 10, 2020

Instruction for weeks; March 16-20 & March 23-27

On the district website there is this icon:

Once you click the icon, you will be connected to a list of websites that offer digital learning resources for students in grades PrK-12 for all courses/classes. The resources are primarily enrichment/extension in nature.  These are the instructional materials for this week and for use at any time during the next four weeks while we are out of school.

Instruction for weeks; March 30 – April 10.

For the weeks following, we will utilize this process/procedure:

WAVE class Case Managers will be emailing a google file to parents that will contain their student's work to be completed each week. The folder will be updated each week with anywhere from 2-3 assignments a week.

In addition to posting the lessons and the materials electronically, we will be printing any materials/lessons for the upcoming week and distribute them to students who do not have access to the internet and/or to a computer.

*At this time, we are not going to “formally” grade student work.  However, we will determine a way to give credit for work completed and turned in during the next four weeks.  Discussions are forthcoming on how to access work and give credit.  At this time, our primary focus is to provide high quality instruction and direction for our students.

Instruction for the Remaining FIVE – SIX Weeks:  April 13 – May 21.

If we resume classes as planned on April 13, we have a great opportunity to provide high quality instruction focusing on the ESSENTIAL STANDARDS (TEKS) that students must master in order to be ready for and to experience success in the next course or at the next level.

During the week of April 6-9 wee will focus on writing lessons for the week of April 13 – 17 reviewing key concepts taught during the school year and those presented in the lessons provided during the four weeks we were out of school. We will then focus on the essential TEKS for the remainder of the school year.

Final exams will be administered to seniors as planned May 13-15 and to students in grades 9-11 during the week of May 18-21.

I have created a google classroom also:  I will add the lessons to classroom by FRIDAY the week before.

1st and 5th period JUNIORS class code is: csotsl7

3rd and 4th SOPHOMORES class code is: 6odsczn

7th period FRESHMAN class code is: 6immlga

I know this is a lot to process right now, but don't worry. I know that's easier said than done.

We are doing everything we can to ensure our students receive adequate, equitable, and quality instruction with what we've been given.

PLEASE don't hesitate to call me or text me - emailing me is perfectly fine. With the influx of emails I prefer to be contacted by phone. Of course the building is off limits for us teachers at the moment so I'm providing my personal cell phone: 2812291187

I'm available to talk Monday through Friday 7-3, just like any other school day.

The mission of the Dickinson Independent School District is to ensure that all students have successful learning opportunities that help them reach their full potential and add quality throughout their lives.
