Good readers ask questions beforeduring, and after reading

Before Reading Questions- Before reading the story, do a picture walk and look closely at the illustrations. Make predictions and set a purpose for reading by determining the genre of the story.

Fiction- historical, science, realistic, fantasy     Nonfiction – informational text, biography, autobiography

·       What three things did you notice about the text as you previewed it?

·       What do you hope to learn/experience from your reading?

·       Read the first paragraph, what do you think is going to happen?

·       Based on the title and illustrations, what do you think will happen in the story?

·       Read the first paragraph, what genre do you think this book is?

·       What text features do you notice as you preview the text?

 

 

During Reading Questions- Stop and think about what you are reading. Ask yourself these questions as you read. Write down any words that are unfamiliar or you do not know the meaning of. Then use context clues to determine the meaning. Use a dictionary or your electronic device to check if you were right.

·       Is your mind wondering? What are you wondering about?

·       What point of view is your story told in?

First person- main character telling the story (I, me, my, we, us) Third Person- an outsider that is not a part of the story telling the events (Main character(s) by name, he, she, they, them)

·       What do you find interesting about the text so far?

·       What is the topic of your text?

·       What is the setting of your story? (Time and place)

·       What images are you creating in your mind?

·       What have you read that is brand new information to you?

·       Are there text features that help you understand the text? (photographs, captions, diagrams, subtitles)

·       What connections are you making to your own life?

·       What do you predict will happen next and why?

·       What three details are most important so far?

·       Do you like the characters in the story so far? Why or why not?

 

 

After Reading Questions-  After reading the text, use text evidence to answer the following questions.

·       What is one thing you want to remember from the reading?

·       What was your favorite part of the story? Why?

·       Did the author use any figurative language in the story? Write an example. (simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, alliteration)

·       If you were the author, what would you change about the story? Why?

·       What problem did the character face? Was it solved?

·       Did the character/characters change from the beginning to the end of the story? How so?

·       What questions do you still have?

·       How would you describe the main character?

·       Were you correct about the genre? If not, what is the genre? How do you know?

·       Is there a lesson in the story? If so, what is it?

·       What did you dislike about the story? Why?

·       What did you learn about the topic of the text? What else would you like to learn?
