Read From Home. . . or Anywhere!

Here are some free resources to use during the time at home. These are to supplement and enrich what is already being provided by the district, campus, and classroom teacher. Use the tabs above to find the type of reading materials you need. Although the focus is on reading, there is a tab of great virtual field trips to go on. 

It's Story Time!

Use the links below to have story time at home. This is especially helpful for the PreK, Kinder, and First grade students; however, you're never too old for story time.  Afterwards, have a short discussion about the story. What was the best part? Who was their favorite character? What time period or location did the story take place? Is it like other stories they've heard?

Storyline Online from the Screen Actors Guild has a variety of books being read by actors. Each includes how long the reading takes as well as the appropriate age group.


Just Books Read Aloud has a great varied of stories. It is free; however, there are ads across the top and along the side. Be sure to use the blue menu, not the grade levels on the right (it's an ad). This site includes books in Spanish. 


Vamos a La Biblio is a fantastic YouTube channel with popular picture books in Spanish.

The sites below offer a variety of books at different levels. It is important to use the 5 finger rule to determine if the book is a good fit for you. 


Oxford Owl is free; however, it does require that an account be created.


International Children's Digital Library has a variety of books in multiple languages.
Wilbooks is offering some great short nonfiction titles to read online. They are divided by grade level, but be sure to use the 5 finger check to be sure it is a good fit for you.

Check out some great titles from Sebco. Use your student ID number during login.


If you have a public library card, visit the library site for steps on checking out eBooks and audio books. 


Read Conmigo is offering books free to download as well as activities. They have items in  English and Spanish. It does require an account be created.

Take a break and go on a field trip! Have your student put on his/her class shirt and pack a lunch. You could even make a "bus" out of a box to travel to one of the destinations below. 


Houston Museum of Natural Science--Visit the online exhibitions and enjoy a wide range of choices.


San Diego Zoo--Who doesn't love a trip to the zoo? Students can explore the animals with fun facts and web cams. Just remember that the zoo is two hours earlier. I didn't see much on my first visit since it was 6:00 AM  there. 


Monterey Bay Aquarium--This one is also on the west coast; however, there are videos of the marine life that play when the cameras aren't live. 


Smithsonian Museum of Natural History--Enjoy all of the amazing exhibits including the African Bush Elephant in the Rotunda. Click on Current Exhibits.


The Alamo--Enjoy a leisurely virtual stroll around this amazing historical site.


History View Virtual Tours--Wow! This site has something for everyone. Enjoy!
