The Science team at Barber Middle School is looking forward to helping your child have a successful school year. Mrs. Brannon, Mrs. Teatsworth, Mr. Sonntag, Mr. Sarnowski and
Mrs. Lacey (Academic Coach) are the 5th grade science teachers. 5th grade Science is very challenging for most students. Students must take the Science STAAR test in addition to Reading and Math STAAR. The material that has been covered in the previous 4 years of school plus the material covered this year will be on the test. It is up to your child, with your support and ours, to work very hard to study and be prepared. This is not an easy class. Our expectation is that your child will put forth his or her best effort at all times.
We vary activities throughout the class. We will have labs, notes, videos, hands- on learning, and technology lessons. Each student is required to have a Composition Notebook, the purpose of this notebook is to help house and organize all lessons and labs from class. This notebook will be essential in preparing your child for unit exams and the Science STAAR test.
We welcome you to visit our classrooms. If you have knowledge that is related to our current topic, we would love to have you as a guest speaker. We are always looking for donations of materials for our labs and cool science stuff. Remember, family support is vital to your child’s success.
You can always contact us via e-mail and phone. We check our e-mail frequently throughout the day.
If your child is having any issues with the class or is not understanding the material, please encourage them to ask their science teacher for help. We will do what we can to help your child succeed.

Contact: If you have email, that is the most effective way to reach us. If you have written a note for the teacher, please make sure you tell your child to show it to us. We will be contacting you throughout the year about the progress of your child. Please be aware that we cannot answer the phone during class. We will return phone calls during our individual conference periods and after school. AVID binders are a way teachers can send notes home to parents. You can also use this as a way to keep up with what your child is doing each week.
