Most assignments will be listed in Schoology and can be accessed as needed by our students. Please check Schoology daily for more detailed class learning materials, notes, assignments and to access any late or missing assignments/work.

.

STEAM Math is a fast paced course with a high level of student learning expectations.

.

*STEAM students ask questions and take an active role in their own learning.

.

*Good STEAM students seek help as soon as possible.

.

Our daily lessons build on one another, so if you do not understand todays lesson you may be lost when it comes to tomorrows or the following days lessons, so please ask questions often, take good notes in class, use the math resources I have provided in Schoology and click on any of the AT HOME RESOURCES below.

.

I have included links below to Math videos that will help provide you with at home Math skills practice and enrichment.

skyward link
Skyward is one of the most important tools students and parents will use this year. Skyward can be used to check grades, missing assignments, attendance and even to send you notifications. Your STEAM teachers strongly recommend that you log into Skyward and set up these notification options. You may choose to be alerted when your child has a missing assignment or perhaps if an assignment is graded less than a 70. We also recommend that BOTH you and your student check Skyward weekly.  This will help you and your student stay on top of missing work, so it can be completed and turned in as soon as possible.

Students will enter the classroom at a voice level 0, go directly to their seat and open their AVID binders to the agenda page.  Students will log their daily agenda information etc., then take out their warm-ups and complete that day’s questions. Students will have until the end of the transition time to complete these tasks as well as to use the restroom, sharpen pencils, gather needed supplies etc. and get ready for class to begin.

Attendance will be taken every class period.

.

**Due to the ever changing COVID-19 situation additional health screeners/student wellness measures may be implemented as the school/DISD deems necessary and in the best interest of our students/staff. In the event these measures become necessary they will be communicated to you via the district and/or BMS.

.

**Students are responsible for making sure they make up any missed work, assignments, Classwork etc. Once the student returns to school they should speak with each teacher to obtain any missed work, notes, schedule make-up tests etc. This should be done as soon as possible in the mornings before school starts and is the responsibility of the student.  Always check Google Classroom for class work information, materials, notes etc.

Classroom Behavior Appropriate behavior is an expectation of all STEAM students. Students will at all times, conduct themselves in an appropriate, respectful manner in accordance with all STEAM, BMS and DISD guidelines and codes of conduct. Students will not disrupt the class learning environment. Student misbehavior will be addressed at the time of occurrence and the student will have the opportunity to correct the behavior and move on. If however, this behavior escalates and continues to be a class disruption, disciplinary measures will be taken and the appropriate authorities will be called in to assist with the removal of the student. (principal, assistant principal, councilor, behavior specialists, teachers, security officers etc.)

Students will write:

their name (First and Last)

class period

date

in the upper right corner of every assignment, classwork, worksheet etc. that is to be turned in. Graded assignments turned in with no names cannot be added into the grade book.

Students who turn in assignments with no names will have a zero entered into the grade book and a note indicating that the assignment is missing, until the assignment is claimed and properly labeled.

Only supplies that are math related and necessary for class can be out on the students desks during class.

Students must have daily:

pencil

eraser

math journal (composition notebook - NOT SPIRAL)

personal pencil sharpener

AVID 3-ring binder with Math Folder

personal hand sanitizer bottle

*Additional items that we will need throughout the year and should be kept in a pencil pouch in their AVID binders include:

dry erase marker

glue stick

scissors

colored pencils

.

Students will carry their supplies including their Math journals with them throughout the day in their backpacks. Backpacks and other materials must be stowed on the back of their chair, on the rack under their seats or on the floor under their desk. For safety reasons no items can be left in the aisles or walkways. Non-essential materials present during class time may be temporarily taken from the student.

.

Our class will need a constant supply of dry erase markers, glue sticks, hand sanitizer, tissues, and Clorox wipes. These are the items that we use up the quickest and will need replenishing throughout the year.  Please send in any of these items at any time during the year if you would like to help keep our classroom well stocked, especially during cold and flu season and to assist us in stopping the spread of COVID-19. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Upon entering the classroom each day students will have 5 minutes to complete their warm-up silently at their seat. This is independent work and students must get started immediately.  Once the warm-up is completed, students will review their math journal notes, practice their math facts or work practice problems until class begins.

STEAM classes value the 4 C's:

.

Class participation is a very important part of our daily learning in the STEAM program. Class participation and student engagement is one of the ways we set ourselves apart from non-STEAM classes. For this reason we hold our students accountable for proper classroom collaborative behavior and we set high expectations for our students to take can active roles in their personal learning.

.

Participating in class discussion: Students must raise a hand in order to be called on, unless cold called by the teacher. All other students must be silent and facing the speaking student/teacher. Students should always answer questions using complete sentences. Students should consult the classroom posters for prompts on how to ask for help/clarification if they do not know how to respond to a question, need more time, information etc.

.

Getting student attention: The teacher will say “TO INFINITY” Students will respond, “AND BEYOND” this is the signal I will use to gain their attention and bring the class back into focus. When students hear this call to attention they should rapidly finish their group conversations, stop working, turn to face the teacher and listen for further instructions.

.

Showing that students understand: Some of the ways are listed below:

  • Exit Tickets
  • Journal Writes
  • Random Calls on Students or Groups for an answer or observation.
  • Pop quizzes
  • Common Assessments
  • White Board answer responses

Computer Usage: Students will use Ipads, Chrombooks, and desk top computers in this class and may at times be instructed to use their personal smart phones, laptops etc. Appropriate digital citizenship is expected at all times regardless of the device being used.

During this course, students will use ONLY teacher approved websites. All non-approved computer usage is prohibited. The imporper use of electronics will result in disciplinary measures.

We will not be holding tutorials this year. However, students needing additional instruction may be pulled into a small group during class or during a STEAM intervention time throughout the week.

Turning in papers: Students will keep papers in the math folder of their AVID binders until it is time to have them collected. Students will turn papers in as indicated by the teacher. Work should be completed ahead of time and ready to be turned in, this includes having the paper properly labeled with their name, date and class period before coming to class. Time and speed are important to avoid wasting valuable class time.

.

Moving about the room: Due to the COVID environment that we live in, movement within the classroom will be limited to engaging learning experiences only. Students will remain seated and follow classroom procedures on movement about the room. Hand signals will be used by the student if an urgent restroom break is needed outside of the normal restroom breaks given during transition times. Please note that these urgent needs should not be  normal or reoccurring events. Students my leave their seats without a signal and as needed to get tissues as long as there is only 1 student at the tissue box at a time. There will be several tissue boxes around the room for their use.

.

Students should move quietly and should allow others to continue working. Any disruption in this process will result in the student returning immediately to his/her seat. If this becomes a reoccurring issue further disciplinary measure will be taken.

.

Asking a question: Students will follow the CHAMPS posters in our room for communication prompts during activities.  Possible opportunities for questions are as follows:

  • Students will discuss work with a partner during lessons.
  • Students may also ask questions from their group partners.
  • Student needing assistance from the teacher will raise his/her hand.

.

If students finish work early: Students should log into Skyward to verify they have no additional work to be completed (missing or late assignments etc.). Once all work is completed, students should begin the enrichment activity for the day. These enrichment activities will be listed on the board below the daily agenda.

.

Group work: Students will work at the appropriate voice level according to the teacher. All students in the group must be active in their work or conversations and all student names must be on any items turned in. Side or off- topic conversations will not be tolerated.  Most work will be done with their table mates, as turn and talks or with teacher assigned groups. Groups that continue to not follow proper procedures, not cooperate, argue etc. will be closely monitored and may be disbanded. Additional disciplinary actions may be necessary if this disruptive behavior continues. Group work is an important and valuable tool in our classroom, but we do need to work together to make it successful.

.

Dismissal from class: Students will complete their daily conclusion questions/exit ticket/activity etc. and gather their materials. Any classwork including the conclusion questions that are not completed in class are to be completed at home and returned the next day to class.

.

All work-spaces (above and below the desk) must be picked up and clear for the following class. Students will address any untidiness before leaving the classroom. We will be cleaning our student desks daily in an effort to stop the spread of not only COVID but also other cold and flu germs. Teachers will discuss the proper cleaning procedures with each class. Once the student areas have been picked up and properly cleaned, the teacher will dismiss students by rows starting from one side of the room and proceeding to the other.

Going to the restroom: The restroom should be used before or after class during their transition times. If a student has an urgent restroom need during class they should signal (two fingers crossed), get permission from the teacher, then proceed to the restroom and return as quickly as possible. Please note, that these urgent needs should not be normal or reoccurring events, and will not be allowed if another student is already in the restroom. Every effort should be made to use the restroom during the assigned transition times before or after class.

.

*Emergencies do occur. In the event of an emergency restroom need (diarrhea, vomiting, bloody nose, etc.) the student should immediately go to the restroom as quickly as possible WITHOUT seeking teacher permission. If they fell like they will vomit, please grab the trashcan on your way out and proceed directly to the restroom. The teacher will send a student after you to insure you are OK and to assist in getting you to the nurse. These events will be reported to the proper authorities (Nurse, parents etc.)

.

Students should be made aware of the importance of being in class and present for learning. Restroom breaks are not social time. Students using restrooms for anything other than it's intended function (aka social time, photos, tiktok etc.) may result in restricted/monitored restroom activity and other disciplinary measures. Restroom breaks should be a quick as possible to reduce the amount of class time missed.

.

Leaving the room: When exiting the classroom students must remain at a voice level zero at all times in the hallway.  Students should never touch anything on the walls and they must use the quickest route possible to get to their destination. Students caught wasting time and/or failing to follow hallway procedures will result in the loss of their independent hallway privilege.   Students traveling as a class will do so in straight lines and follow the Safe and Civil standards for Barber.

.

If student gets ill:

.

NON-EMERGENCY: If a student feels ill and wishes to see the nurse in a non-emergency capacity (fever, not feeling well etc.) They should tell the teacher as soon as possible but during a natural break in the classroom teaching, for example during a break between an activity, at the beginning of class or during the last 10 minutes of class. If the students meets the nurse's criteria for seeing students the teacher will provide the student with a nurses pass and allow the student to proceed to the nurses office. Please note that the criteria and procedures for seeing the nurse may change as our response to the COVID crisis changes.  Students are responsible for all missed classwork, notes etc. and they will need to make arrangement to make this material up.

.

EMERGENCY

*If a student has a medical emergency the teacher must be notified immediately.

.

*In the event of an emergency restroom need (diarrhea, vomiting, bloody nose, etc.) the student should immediately go to the restroom as quickly as possible WITHOUT seeking teacher permission. If they feel like vomiting, please grab the trashcan on your way out and proceed directly to the restroom. The teacher will send a student after you to insure that you are OK and to assist in getting you to the nurse. These events will be reported to the proper authorities (nurse, parents etc.)

.

Pencil sharpening: In an attempt to reduce classroom disruptions as well as the spread of contagious pathogens such as COVID and the cold and flu viruses, we are limiting student movement around the room. Students should have a personal pencil sharpener either in their backpack or in their pencil pouch clipped into their AVID binders. They can use this to keep their pencils sharp as needed throughout class.

.

Trash Can: Students must keep all of their trash at their desk (including pencil sharpening waste) until the end of class. Students will deposit their trash into the trashcan upon exiting the classroom. Exceptions would include vomiting, in which case the student should grab the trashcan and proceed to the restroom and for tissue disposal. Once a student has use a tissue they must place it into the trashcan and use hand sanitizer before returning to their seat.

.

Tissues: Students my leave their seats without a signal or teacher permission and as needed to get tissues as long as there is only 1 student at the tissue box at a time. There will be several tissue boxes around the room for their use.

Behavior during announcements: All students must be silent, focused and not working during announcements. Once announcements have finished, students should continue their work or assignment.

Fire Drills: Students will leave all of their materials and immediately line up at the door. Check the fire exit chart near the door to find the appropriate exit. All students must remain silent and orderly during the drill.

If student is tardy: A tardy student will work on the warm-up if the class has not started. If the class has begun, the warm-up will be completed at home for homework.  A tardy student will join students in whatever task they are being asked to complete and all missed notes, assignments, quizzes, tests etc. will be the responsibility of the student to make up and schedule with the teacher.

When student is absent:  Students are responsible for all missed work, assignments, quizzes, exams etc. It is the responsibility of the student to meet with each of his/her teachers immediately upon returning to school in the morning before school starts. Arrangements should be made with these teachers getting their work from the folders, finishing it at home, and making sure it is turned in within the time period set up by the district (1 day absent-1day to complete and return, etc.) Any notes or other materials will be found in the bulletin board folder or they can be copied from a seat partner. Students who are absent should come to tutorials or get their absent work before they start their warm-up.
