Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Engineering is more than just another high school engineering program. It is about applying engineering, science, math, and technology to solve complex, open-ended problems in a real-world context. Students focus on the process of defining and solving a problem, not on getting the "right" answer. They learn how to apply STEM (Science, Technology, Math, and Engineering) knowledge, skills, and habits of mind to make the world a better place through innovation.
Certain colleges and universities are willing to give college credit for PLTW courses. This class will be intensive and rigorous. It will be taught in accordance with PLTW standards.
- Course Description
Students dig deep into the engineering design process,
applying math, science, and engineering standards to hands-on projects.
They work both individually and in teams to design solutions to a variety of problems
using 3D modeling software, and use an engineering notebook to document their work.
- Expectations
All students are expected to:
(1) be on time and ready to work
(2) be respectful to all teachers/staff and fellow students,
(3) follow all DISD/DHS rules
(4) display a positive attitude
- Grades
Final grades are based on completion of class assignments:
- Formative assessments – 50% (this includes classwork, homework, labs, journals, reading responses,
minor projects, notes, and quizzes)
- Summative assessments - 50% (this includes extended labs, presentations, performances, unit tests,
projects, research papers, and Curriculum-based assessments (CBA’s).
- Classwork
Work will consist of reading and answering questions,
completing drawings using sketching and AutoDesk Inventor or SolidWorks,
taking quizzes and tests along with participating in group activities and projects.
Late work will be worth a maximum score of 70%
and will only be accepted during the current 3 week grading period.
- Required Materials
Materials for this class are pencil/erasers, colored pencils, ruler and tape/scissors,
composition notebook (200 pages) with quad ruling (no substitutes), every day.
Students also need to bring a box of tissues and a medium bottle of hand sanitizer.
- Special Notes
If using a smartphone or tablet, there are two (2) apps that will aid in submitting
class projects for this course. Canvas and CamScanner are both free apps and downloadable on your device.
- Field Trips
If a student is selected to attend a CTE field trip,
that student must be passing all of their his/her courses to be eligible.
Eligibility will be determined using the closest grading period.
Approval will be at the discretion of the CTE Director.
