Mr Paul Rose, Welding

SYLLABUS:

Parents and students,

Welcome to the new school year and welcome to welding. I am Mr Rose and my contact information will be at the end of the syllabus, along with an attachment for both you and your child to sign and return in the first week, so that we know you have had the opportunity to review our requirements and our expectations to help make each student as successful and skilled as possible.  Please review this syllabus carefully. It contains important information about course attendance, grades, and behavior expectations.

STUDENTS:  After reading through the syllabus, please sign and return the form by 27 August 2021 . This will be the first grade of the year and will let me know you are serious about being in welding and willing to put in some effort to make yourself successful. If we stay on track and complete the safety assignments and get our required PPE (personal protective equipment), we will be that much closer to being ready to safely enter the lab and WELD. This and all assignments will be worth up to 100 points, if completed on time.  Every day this form is late, there will be 10 points deducted from the 100.  Thank you for staying on track!

Expectations: These are the behaviors that students are expected to exhibit in class:

****Follow all shop safety rules****

  • Have your class materials ready to use. Not having your materials will result in an alternate (and generally less pleasant) assignment.
  •
  • This includes your PPE. Failure to have PPE will result in an alternate assignment, as you cannot safely enter a lab or work area
  • without it, just like in the work force.
  •
  • Follow instructions for turning in assignments, NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED WITHOUT STUDENT/TEACHER AGREEMENT,
  • as all work is arranged to build your knowledge and skills, and help you make associations between the things we learn.
  •
  • Listen carefully to directions and follow them. This is necessary, as details are a major part of successful welding.
  •
  • NO eating or drinking in class, in the locker room, or in the shop. This includes sunflower seeds and gum.
  •
  • Follow all shop safety rules. This is NOT a "sometimes' or even a "most of the time." SAFETY is the key to getting and staying
  • employed in any industrial field. If you are removed from the shop for safety reasons, your ability to remain in the welding program
  • will be reviewed and a determination will be made based on circumstances.
  •
  • Students will be penalized for cheating and/or plagiarism.  The student will receive a 0, and possible further action depending on
  • the assignment, at the teacher’s discretion.  Plagiarism is defined as using the ideas or work of another person or persons as if
  • they were one’s own without giving proper credit to the source.
  •
  • Be ready to think–participate–learn!

Dickinson ISD Student Handbook talks about cell phone usage, WE WILL FOLLOW THIS POLICY. Once we have shown we can safely
  • operate in the lab, we will have music from a common speaker.
  •
  • NO Profanity. It is part of our skills to be able to communicate with others effectively. Profanity is not part of being able to express yourself
  • in a professional environment.
  • NO Arguing with your classmates or teacher. This presents a safety hazard, as it disrupts our ability to focus on safe work practices, and is also
  • part of our communication skills we must master.
  •
  • NO TOBACCO OR ANY ILLEGAL SUBSTANCES ALLOWED!! We will ask to have you removed from the program for violating this,
  • no matter what time of year, what your grade is, or how well you have performed up to this point. This is a safety issue.
  • In Welding  we have a reputation to uphold, both inside and outside of the classroom. Be prepared to uphold your behavior at any trip/contest you participate in, to properly represent yourself, your family, your school and Dickinson as a whole.

Discipline Plan: We are a work area, and SAFETY is our first concern, so we will expect that we make every effort to work together and support each other. If we cannot, we will follow the three steps below:

  • First – Student/ Teacher Conference. After school or before school, but within ONE school day.
Second – Parent involvement. Send home letter to be signed & returned. Within 2 school days.
Third - Office referral or after school detention with me, as appropriate.

ACADEMIC GRADES: Grades are based on total points accumulated on quizzes, tests, homework, class assignments, class participation, and projects for the nine weeks. Quizzes, homework, class assignments, and class participation make up 50% of the grade.  Tests, weld tests, and projects make up 50% of the grade.

TEACHER CONTACT INFO: My email address is prose@dickinsonisd.org  This is more likely to get a quick response, but please feel free to contact me by calling my office at 281-229-7869 and leave a message, I will return the call as soon as possible.  Also, please meet with me throughout the year if you have ANY questions or concerns.  We are on the same team…working for success!

Late work: NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED except as described above.  Missing assignments will be a 0 in the gradebook. Late work includes, but is not limited to, work turned in after your class period, the next day, or at any other time during the nine weeks.  I will not accept it if it is not handed in when I ask for it unless it has been cleared through me AHEAD of the due date.

This is to ensure you are prepared for college/industry by having good organizational and time management skills.

Makeup work: Students have one school day for each day absent to turn in all makeup work (unless arrangements are made with the instructor for more time). Not all class activities can be made up, as they require direct participation by the student, so alternative make-up assignments may be assigned.

Supplies: The students will need the following items for this class:

Paper in a composition notebook.

Pens/Pencils. Black or Blue ink for pens.

PPE (Personal Protective Equipment): Long work pants (denim or similar material, no holes), long sleeved shirts without holes (preferably fire retardant, but MUST be a natural fiber not synthetic- cotton is preferred), leather or heavy canvas work boots, safety glasses (prescription glasses will be discussed further in class, contacts are acceptable with regular safety glasses), a welding hood, and welding gloves.

ALL STUDENTS WILL BE REQUIRED TO HAVE PPE ON THEIR RETURN TO SCHOOL

Daily Shop Performance

Daily shop Performance will account for daily grades. Performance will be graded using a rubric that includes cleanliness of work areas. A well maintained work area and tools are signs of professionalism.

Test Grades

Test Grades will be administered in the shop according to the Welding Code used, with the exception of our safety test and required exams.

Remote Learning

We will utilize Google Classroom as the main learning platform, with resources coming from Miller Openbook and ICEV. We will generate accounts and login information as a class and review necessary procedures.

I am available both before and after school for tutorials AS REQUESTED. I am also available for conferences during my planning period (presently 5th, approximately 12:30-1:20)

Hi. I am Paul Rose, one of the Welding teachers here at DHS. This is my third year at DHS, and each one has taught me new things. I am coming from a background of industrial gas plant work and, primarily, US Navy Submarine Force engineering. I am very happy to be here helping mold the future welders from DISD and try to make myself available as often as possible for you or your student.

This year I am teaching both Introduction to Welding and Welding 1 classes.

Please feel free to contact me about your student whenever you have a question about how they are doing or how they can get assistance if they are having trouble, as I am quite aware that welding and the math and metallurgy can be challenging at times.

I am available both before and after school by appointment, and have 5th period planning, which is from 12:30-1:20 each day.

As we plan for our return to campus, I will be online each day, M-F, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. AT A MINIMUM. I am normally on line throughout the day, but these hours are specifically dedicated to helping students. I may not respond immediately, but will make every effort to respond within the same school day.

All of the students in my classes will use Google Classroom throughout the year. They will also use Miller OpenBook, where they will use their DISD email to build and maintain an account of their progress. They should not have any issues competing our work in this format, but, if they do, I am a simple email away and will do my best to answer questions until after dinner each day.
