Robinson’s Classroom Procedure

Entering the room

Students will enter the room quietly, sit at their assigned seat, and begin on dailies.

  1. Sharpen pencil if needed. (Borrow pencil from class set if needed)
  2. Complete Planner entry (Homework and tasks will be on back board)
  3. Warm Up in AVID Binder (Instructions on board)

Attendance:

While students are quietly working on their warm-up, attendance will be taken using seating chart and put into Skyward. Student helper may also be assigned to take attendance and give to teacher for entry.

Getting to work

Students will be given instructions on what the task will be. I will random choose a student to explain the directions again to the class before we begin to work.

Dismissal from class

The bell doesn't dismiss students, I do.  Therefore, I will be standing by the door and will call out one station at a time to get up, push their chairs in, and proceed to leave the class. After all 7 stations have exited the class, I will stand in the center of the hallway to monitor students between the passing periods.

Participating in class discussion

Every student should participate everyday. Students will be randomly chosen to participate in class using popsicle sticks, random generators, etc. If a student refuses to participate I will skip them and come back before the discussion is over. If a student continues to no participate I will pull them aside and have a private conversation about why they are not participating.

Getting student attention

Utilization of several strategies such as Kranz Call Back (Failure is…), countdown from 3, to get their attention. At the same time i do a call back I will physically raise my hand and they will raise theirs until everyone is quiet.

Showing that students understand

Students will use strategies such as Thumbs Up/Down to show if they understand, need more directions, or re-teaching. Exit tickets will also be used to ensure students are understanding concepts.

What to do when students need help

Students will be taught to quietly raise their hand to signal they need my help or assistance. In certain circumstances students will ask their partners before they ask the teacher.

When student is absent

When a student is absent, they will go to the Make-Up crate located on the side cabinet to get the assignments they missed.  I will then explain to them what was done the day before and answer any questions they may have.  Students will be invited to attend tutorials for help with any information they missed.

Turning in papers

One student from each group will collect papers and place in turn in box located by classroom door. Students may also place work in box as they enter or exit the room.

Moving about the room

Stations will either be set up around the room or at each group. Students will rotate as instructed by teacher. Generally in clockwise direction. Usually a timer will be set for each rotation. When students here the timer go off they will rotate as instructed.

Pencil sharpening

Students will sharpen their pencils before the bell rings. This is part of their entering the room procedure.  If the pencil breaks during class, the student must use a hand held sharpener or borrow one from a partner.

Trash can

Students must raise their hand and ask for permission to put something in the trash can. The student will get up, walk to the trash can and not throw it from across the room.

Tissues

Students must raise their hand and ask for permission to get tissues. I will bring them teh tissue box or instruct them to go get a tissue. Once they use their tissue they will quietly throw away their tissue and sanitize their hands.

Heading on papers

Students are to put their first and last name, class period, and today’s date on the top right hand corner of their paper. Title will go in the center of the heading.

Asking a question

Students will raise their hands to ask a question.

Behavior during announcements

Students will be taught that when they hear any announcements come on to stop talking and silently listen. The expectation is that the room is silent during announcements.

Fire drills

When there is a fire drill, students will get up and line up at the door. As they are lining up, I will grab the emergency folder, and we will proceed to walk to our designated area.  Once we arrive at our designated area, I will do a head count to make sure I have all my students and raise my green card to show that all is present.  If for some reason, I’m missing a student or several students, I will then raise my red card to alert them of my situation.

Supplies

Students will keep a certain set of supplies in their AVID binder such as pens, pencils, a pair of scissors, and a glue stick. For classroom supplies, each group will have the supplies need for that lesson already on the tables. If needed one person from each group will be responsible for getting the supplies each group. .

Going to the restroom

Students will follow 10-10 Rule.  They may not leave the first 10 minutes of class nor the last 10 minutes of class.  Students will be encouraged to use the restroom between classes.  They will be allowed to go if it’s an emergency. Students must sign out in order to track their movements.

Leaving the room

Students will not be allowed to leave the room unless going to the nurse, etc.  They will be given a pass if they will be leaving the classroom for a specific reason.

If students finish work early

If a student finishes work early, they will be allowed to do the following things: use the opportunity to better their work, complete make up work in spiral, peer tutor, choose an activity from the “Im done now what” station.

If student gets ill

If a student becomes ill, they will be given a pass to go to the Nurse’s office.  Depending on the situation, I may have another student escort the sick student to the Nurse’s office. Or in the case of a emergency I will call the Nurse to come to the classroom.

Group work

Each student will do their part in the group activity that they were assigned to do. Everyone will be held accountable in the group to prevent one or two people doing all the work. Groups are expected to be collaborative and L.E.A.D. in their groups.

After School

Students are expected to line up at the door. Car riders first then bus riders. We will walk together to main street where teacher will send car riders to the front of the school walk bus riders to the bus line. On duty weeks I will send the bus riders and walk the car riders to the front.
