The school counseling program in Dickinson ISD is designed to meet the needs of all students. In addition to seeing students individually and in classroom settings, the elementary school counselors are trained to teach skills and reinforce learning in small groups. Topics may include friendship, self-control, social skills, stress management, anxiety/worry, grief, anger management, family changes, self-esteem, and/or trauma.
A teacher may refer your child for small group counseling, or you can also refer them based on areas in which your child may need support. We emphasize that groups are for everyone, participating does not indicate a problem. All students can benefit from learning how to accept responsibility, manage stress, communicate effectively, make decisions, and solve problems. Students can learn from one another and enhance their self-concepts in a supportive group setting. Each group meets once a week or once every other week. This takes place during the school day, typically during lunch time and will last for approximately 30 minutes. Most groups meet for 6-8 sessions.
If you would like your child to participate, please complete the parent acknowledgment form and return it to Lobit Elementary School as soon as possible. This allows me us to proceed with placement and scheduling. The groups will be offered based on need and interest.
