While our schools are closed, I will be posting and sharing ideas for the kids to stay sharp with their math skills. Remind them that this is not an early summer vacation. Plans are being made for online learning where they will have to do some work and I will have to get some grades so that they can finish out this year. We are just having to do things a little differently for now.
Here are a few things the kids can do every day to keep up with their math skills:
1 - Prodigy. I have set up math lessons through the end of March reviewing the addition and subtractions word problems that were so hard for the kids on the last CBA. As we move forward, I will add lessons based on the math skills that we learn this 9 weeks. These lessons are based on 30 minutes a day even on the weekends.
2 - School House Rock videos on YouTube. I introduced the kids to School House Rock videos before Spring Break and they loved them! They would come in every day begging to watch more videos. Most videos are 3-5 minutes long.
3 - Multiplication facts - We have just started learning our facts so they only need to practice 2,5, 10, and 9. We haven't learned the 9's yet. I was going to introduce them when we got back because they are fun and the kids always like learning the 9's. 15-20 minutes
4 - Addition and Subtraction facts - Make it a game. I have taught them to add 2, 3 or 4 numbers using a regular deck of cards. No need to go buy flashcards or to spend hours making them if you have a deck of cards around the house. If you are not sure what I am talking about, maybe I can figure out how to make a video and share it here to demonstrate. We have done this in the classroom when we play "Around the World", so everyone should know how to do it. 15-20 minutes
I don't expect the students to sit down and do all of this at one time. Let the kids decide what order they want to do them in. Set 2 30-minute blocks for math (30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the afternoon). They will be ready for school when we return or they will be ready for 3rd grade if we are unable to return this year.
