Reading Programs at the BCES Library

Many business offer rewards to students who read in the summer. There are listed below. This is current as of June 24th. Check the websites for any changes because of covid-19.

This article has links to many programs. I have also linked to a couple of them below.

Great Summer Reading Incentives

Barnes and Noble -- note that the list of books on the journal are not the ones the student has to read. Those are the ones they choose from when they finish.

Half Price Books

4 Books for #4 -- I can't find a link to the program; however, this article has the information needed to sign up for it.

The Bluebonnet program is for students in 3rd and 4th grades. There are several components to this program. First and foremost, students must successfully test on the current Bluebonnet titles to be eligible for the incentives listed below.

  • Bluebonnet voting--Students who complete at least 5 Bluebonnets by the second Friday in January will get to participate in the statewide voting for the Texas Bluebonnet winner.
  • Bluebonnet Reading Tag--Students who complete at least 10 Bluebonnets by the last Friday in April will get a super reading tag for their key chains.
  • Bluebonnet Breakfast--Students who complete at least 15 Bluebonnets by the last Friday in April will be invited to attend the Bluebonnet Breakfast in May.
  • Bluebonnet Rumble--Students may register for the campus contest as a team of 5 or individually (will be placed on a team). Registration will close the Friday before Spring Break. Students must successfully test on at least 4 Bluebonnets before signing up for a team. The campus contest will take place in late March or early April. The winning team will advance to the district contest held in May.
  • The state list has twenty books. DISD librarians will cut 2-5 books from the list to make it more manageable for students to prepare for the competition. 2020-2021 TBA Master List.pdf

We have a limited number of copies of each Bluebonnet. You may also check out the Bluebonnets from the public library or check them out through the Overdrive app using your smart device. The links below have info on using Overdrive.

There are videos of some Bluebonnets that students may watch. I recommend watching them at least two times unless the student also has the book to follow along. These videos are from sources other than DISD and may contain adds and/or popups.

Additional Programs

Pleasure Pier

From October through March, students may earn an all day pass from Pleasure Pier for turning in a completed calendar by the end of the first week of the following month or the 8th, whichever comes first. Parents need to initial each day to show that the student read for twenty minutes. If the student reads more than twenty minutes, parents should write the number of minutes on that day of the calendar in addition to initials.

Schlitterbahn

Students may earn a free ticket to Schlitterbahn Galveston by reading 600 minutes from November 11- January 10th. Times and titles must be recorded on the Waves of Pages reading log. Parent initials are also required.

Read Nation

This is a program sponsored by the Houston Rockets. Schools compete against each other to see who can read the most minutes. Information about it will be posted as soon as it is received.
The 2 X 2 program is for Kinder-2nd grade. Because we also have the fabulous Battle of the Books program for those grades, I don't focus so much on these. We do have them in the library for those who are interested in reading them.

We no longer have AR in DISD. Our literacy committee is currently working on what direction we will take this year. This page will be updated with more information once we have the details.

Students will take an a new assessment test to determine current reading level. We will be able to convert that to the levels that are currently on the books.
