Welcome & Greetings
My name is Michael O’Gea and I am the AVID elective teacher and coordinator. I proudly wear many different hats: husband, dad, teacher, coach (that hat is "racked" for now), and friend. These titles alone do not entirely define "me".
I am also the first in my family to graduate from college. After high school, I never saw myself in college and entered the workforce of the petrochemical industry. As my responsibilities expanded, I attended and graduated from Alvin Community College with an A.A.S. in Business Management. Throughout my career, I felt a calling to "do more". So, after 22 years and 4 children (all grown now), I graduated from Lamar University in Beaumont with a Bachelor Degree to serve my calling in education. The journey was by no means an easy one, but I would not exchange it for any amount of money.
In my personal life, I enjoy spending time with family, reading, watching college and pro sports, camping, physically exploring Texas History, and drinking coffee and iced tea… sometimes all at once!
I believe that all students deserve the best education possible. Education affords students the opportunity to fully discover themselves and their gifts and talents. The great thing is all of this can be accomplished while gaining relevant real world/real life instruction and experience in today’s ever changing global community.
As an educator, I am privileged and honored to help prepare our students for the awesome task to take their place in the world, without trepidation; from junior high, to high school, to college, and beyond.
WELCOME TO AVID ONLINE 2020-21
How will students attend class?
- To start, we will hold Google Classroom and Zoom class sessions daily at the scheduled times below. The information for how to access the AVID Zoom class is posted in the Google Classroom.
- Students must join Zoom daily at whatever time their AVID class begins. For example, if their schedule in Skyward/Google classroom says that they have AVID during 2nd period, they must join the Zoom meeting daily at 9:20.
How will students complete work?
- Google Classroom will be used for: assignments, attendance, resources, and class communication not covered in our Zoom meeting.
- In the event a student misses a Zoom meeting, they should refer to Google Classroom for that day's work.
How will I help students if they get lost or need directions?
- My first piece of advice to students is this "In the beginning, don’t try to get ahead of me, we'll make time for that later". Online learning presents it's own set of challenges - We are going to encounter problems and make mistakes. We will do this together and in a spirit of patience and granted grace.
- Second, students shouldn’t stress over any obstacles or struggles that may encounter. We will "Work Hard and Finish Strong" as "One Team with One Dream."
- Finally, I currently plan to be available on Zoom and Google Classroom for the entire class period. I will also be on Zoom for ANY class daily from 3:00 - 3:30 PM to help with questions AVID students have about: what they're doing, what they need to do, and arrive at how to best get it done.
