What is AVID?
Advancement Via Individual Determination is a college readiness program that provides support to students.
At McAdams Junior High School, AVID is an elective course for eligible students. Students may start the AVID program as early as 5th grade continuing through graduation. Along with support in the AVID Elective Course, students at McAdams Junior High use AVID strategies in all classes to increase student achievement, instructional rigor and college readiness.  For more information about AVID, visit their website at avid.org.

AVID Center Mission
AVID Center’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

AVID Elective
The AVID Elective Course is a year-long elective class available within the regular academic school day.  The purpose of the course is to provide academic support to AVID students who are in rigorous courses.  In addition, the AVID Elective Course provides unique tutorial opportunities, college and career exploration, study skill development and general academic success. Interested students may contact their counselor.

AVID Schoolwide
AVID is schoolwide when a strong AVID program transforms the systems, leadership, instruction and culture of a school ensuring college-readiness for all students. Teachers representing all curriculum departments are AVID trained—by attending AVID Summer Institutes or during in-district AVID Professional Development. AVID methodologies are incorporated into the content levels and classroom expectations across all curricular departments resulting in a consistent schoolwide college-going culture.

AVID Binders 2018-2019 School Year -- Schoolwide this year!
We are excited to announce that for the 2018-19 school year, McAdams Junior High School will be implementing a school-wide AVID Binder system to develop learners who can self-direct, self-evaluate, self-monitor, and self-advocate. ALL STUDENTS WILL BE REQUIRED to maintain their school binder following the AVID Binder model.
What is the AVID Binder?
The AVID Binder is a system for keeping essential school materials and class assignments organized into one binder. A proper AVID Binder contains all the materials in the “Required Items” section of the AVID Binder Checklist (please see attached) in the order outlined in How to Organize Your AVID Binder.
AVID binder checks will be conducted once a month in predetermined classes. Teachers leading the monthly AVID Binder checks will be looking for “Required Items” and overall organization.
How can I support my child at home?
Regularly check your child’s backpack and AVID Binder. All papers should be placed in binder rings in the proper class section. Remove unnecessary papers. Ensure all required materials are present. We encourage you to reference the checklist below.
Check your child’s Student Planner daily. Sign your child’s planner every time you review it.

Thank you for your partnership and support. If you have any questions about the AVID Binder, do not hesitate to contact us.
