What is AVID?

Advancement Via Individual Determination is a college readiness program that provides support to students.

At McAdams Junior High School, AVID is an elective course for eligible students. Students may start the AVID program as early as 5th grade continuing through graduation. Along with support in the AVID Elective Course, students at McAdams Junior High use AVID strategies in all classes to increase student achievement, instructional rigor and college readiness .

AVID Center Mission

AVID Center’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

AVID Elective

The AVID Elective Course is a year-long elective class available within the regular academic school day.  The purpose of the course is to provide academic support to AVID students who are in rigorous courses.  In addition, the AVID Elective Course provides unique tutorial opportunities, college and career exploration, study skill development and general academic success. Interested students may contact their counselor.

AVID Schoolwide

AVID is schoolwide when a strong AVID program transforms the systems, leadership, instruction and culture of a school ensuring college-readiness for all students. Teachers representing all curriculum departments are AVID trained—by attending AVID Summer Institutes or during in-district AVID Professional Development. AVID methodologies are incorporated into the content levels and classroom expectations across all curricular departments resulting in a consistent schoolwide college-going culture.
